David Tobey Art Show Benefits Westchester Philharmonic
New Rochelle painter,
sculptor, and founding
member of the Westchester
Philharmonic violin section David
Tobey, helped to raise funds to support
the orchestra through a retrospective
exhibition of his past five years'
artwork. The show was held at BID
Gallery 542, in New Rochelle's newly
established downtown arts district and
opened with a reception on Thursday
evening November 12th.
The public was invited to view
and purchase over 50 of Tobey's
paintings, prints, and welded steel
sculptures. Live music was donated
to the cause by members and friends
of the Philharmonic, violist Sandy
Robbins, cellist Lanny Paykin, and
violinist Roxanne Bergman. David
Tobey even sat down to play a few
pieces as did his wife, violinist
Moira Tobey.
A full 50% of the proceeds from all
exhibition sales went to support the
Westchester Philharmonic's programs
in music education and presentation.
Thousands of dollars have been raised
to date. Thank you to David Tobey for his artwork
and dedication to the orchestra!

About David Tobey
David Tobey, who is a member of the Westchester Philharmonic, started painting in his early
childhood in the Larchmont New York studio of his father, the noted historical painter and
muralist Alton S. Tobey. He also had a serious interest in music, fostered perhaps in no
small part by his mother Rosalyn Tobey, who was a distinguished concert pianist.
In his teens, David Tobey studied art at The Art Students League in
New York and violin at The Music Conservatory of Westchester. He subsequently gained
admission to The Julliard School of Music and graduated there with a performance degree
in 1975. He also holds a Master's degree in Studio Art from The College of New Rochelle,
in the city where he lives. David Tobey enjoys a busy career as a violinist and teacher. In
addition to the Philharmonic, he performs with many of the New York City freelance orchestras,
such as the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and Broadway shows.
David was recently informed in a letter from Joseph W. Polisi, President
of The Juilliard School that he was selected in August 2004 as one of a diverse group of
100 outstanding alumni of the school for inclusion in a special publication commemorating
the school's Centennial to be published in 2005-2006. He was also recently appointed to a
selection board for artist members for ArtsWestchester that was convened in March of 2005,
and in April of 2006 his painting Fallen Angels, 2001 was accepted into the
collection of the proposed George Bush Presidential Library.
