Classroom Music Education Program
Peter and the Wolf
for Grades 3-6
Designed for elementary school students in grades 3-6, the Philharmonic's education program strives to integrate music into the academic classroom. This season the Philharmonic brings Prokofiev's irresistible and enchanting tale of Peter and the Wolf to students across Westchester. Prokofiev composed the music in 1936 as a child's introduction to the orchestra, with each character in the story represented by a different instrument or group of instruments: Peter by the strings, the bird by the flute, the duck by the oboe, and so on. The piece has delighted audiences of all ages since its writing and has a long history as an instructional tool.
Using the story of Peter and the Wolf, students will not only learn about the instruments of the orchestra but gather important lessons that can be tied into a multitude of academic subjects. Study guides as well as visits from professional teaching artists will help academic teachers to weave the music and story into everyday classroom lessons. The full story will then be spoken by a narrator accompanied by the orchestra as a culminating live musical experience.
Peter and the Wolf includes:
- Study Guide(pdf);
- excerpts from Peter and the Wolf that will be accessible via our website;
- an optional visit from one or more of our teaching artists;
